Happiness is: The Hilton, Cancun Resort…

We have just returned from a 10-night stay at the beautiful Hilton all inclusive resort in Cancun, and what a stay it was. Coming back to the drizzly chilly Glasgow summer has left me with a serious case of holiday blues, so whilst I reminiscence about relaxing at the resort, this seemed to be the perfect time to dish the details of our luxury adventure - whilst I sip on tropical cocktails, unpack our cases, and naturally plan our next dose of escapism, of course.

Travel, especially in 2023, is not cheap so I'm lucky and privileged to have travelled quite a bit already this year, whether that's a solo work trip, or group friends adventure. But with the boys school and activities there've been very few family getaways and we decided that needed to change! After a family meeting, we agreed on somewhere hot, fun, and all inclusive of course. We wanted the luxury resort feeling, where there would be no need to do anything more than eat, drink, swim, and be pampered.

Sure, the adventurous soul within me wanted to fly away to somewhere completely unfamiliar, exotic and exciting. But the tired mama that comprises 97% of my soul just wanted comfort and familiarity. So Mexico called to us. It holds a special place on our hearts and Cancun was somewhere we had been before and loved. With all the trips here, you'd think my Spanish would be better, but try though I might, it's safer for me to stick to English. I have many skills but language acquisition is apparently not one of them. But hey, I know how to say margarita, and really what more could I need?

Cancun is beautiful and ticked all the boxes we wanted. And with a little help from my favourite consultant - Trip Advisor – I was able to narrow down my options. I was surprised when the Hilton topped our choice list, because I'd always considered it the top tier of hotels, as well as the top tier of pricing. So cue my shocked Pikachu face when it was not only affordable, but had everything we could possibly want. For the grownups we wanted lots of delicious food choices, nice pools, easy beach location, and a hotel room big enough that we weren't ready to strangle one another by day two.

We booked it then and there, with 44 days to go until the big day. Which meant 44 days of Carter asking poor old Alexa "Alexa, how many days until 23rd June..."

Our 10-hour flight was surprisingly chilled, a few snacks and movies later, we were back in our happy place. It had been 4 years since our last visit to Cancun (oh how the world changed in those 4 years) and I instantly felt a sense of being home as we touched down on the runway.

Upon arrival, I knew we had made the right choice. The lobby was light and contemporary with coastal details, my designer's heart was singing here. Colin and I both looked at each other in the queue for check-in and simultaneously nodded and smiled at each other, which was rather sweet. I think we both were feeling the same sense of happiness and peace.

Entering our 1-bedroom seaview suite was like walking into our own slice of heaven. It was stunning. With a separate living room, and an extra toilet (living with three men and one bathroom is no joke) a beautiful airy bedroom, and what had to be the biggest bathroom I've seen at any of our resort holidays. It also had lots of storage space, which made keeping ten days worth of luggage clean and tidy so much easier - as an avid over-packer, this was much appreciated.

Deciding to start the holiday as we meant to go on, our first stop after settling in was to dinner at the La Luce Italian restaurant, where we ate our fill of delicious, comfort food, before heading to bed on a carb high.

The next morning I woke up at 4am, full of excitement and impatiently waiting for everyone else to wake up too. The early start meant I got to sit in peace and watch the sunrise from our balcony, a view that I could never tire of seeing. Sure I see the sunrise in Glasgow, but oh boy it is not the same. When everyone was awake a couple hours later, I was already energised and ready to explore! Its been a Murphy family tradition that we always do a full tour of the resort on our first full day, so off we went! We mapped everything out and made mental notes of where our favourite things could be found, including the different pools, restaurants, and kids club areas. The Hilton wasn't the biggest resort we've stayed at, but it was still very spacious and well laid out, and meant the boys familiarised themselves quickly.

Breakfast, Hilton Cancun

Breakfast

We all had our favourite places within the hotel pretty much immediately. The boys loved the colourful splash park, and of course the sweetie and ice cream shop - they loved their daily trips for fresh, delicious churros. Colin and I really loved the quality of all the foods on offer, whether that was at breakfast with fresh crepes, and omelettes, lunch at the superb Sunan Asian flavours restaurant or from one of the many yummy food carts by the pool. Dario served a mean burger and Cole even said it was better than anything he'd tasted elsewhere - high praise from a grumpy teen! But dinner was the culinary highlight, they had three a la carte options to choose from: La Luce (Italian) Auma (open fire grill) and Maxal (Mexican). Our favourite one had to be Auma, the steaks were amazing, but the star of the show was the mashed potato (I NEED that secret recipe, no mash I've made had ever tasted so good).

The boys spent a lot of their time in the water like the true water babies they are! I always look for resorts with lots of pools or water parks and slides, as nothing makes the boys happier than having a splash about in the sun. Plus being poolside whilst they play just gives me the chance to experience the delicious cocktails from the nearest bar, allowing me to sip in the sun and forget my troubles.

My body may be in Glasgow, but I left my soul in Cancun, where I will hopefully rejoin it soon enough. Until then, at least my soul will be warm and relaxed!
