Golden Hour and Gelato – Our Autumn Weekend in Edinburgh

A warm, detailed family travel guide to Edinburgh in autumn. From surfing and illusions to cosy nights at RIGH Residences, discover activities, food spots and golden hour magic across Scotland’s capital.

Autumn in Edinburgh is one of those magical in-between seasons. Crisp but not cold, golden leaves tumbling along cobbled streets, and that soft light that makes everything glow. After weeks of early swim-club starts, football practice and the usual family chaos, we were overdue a proper break. A weekend to slow down, explore, reconnect and enjoy some much-needed time together.

This time, we stayed at RIGH Residences on George Street, and honestly, it could not have been more perfect. Beautiful interiors, thoughtful design, impeccable comfort and a location that put us right in the heart of the city. For a family weekend in Edinburgh, it was everything we needed and more.

Surfing into the Weekend at Lost Shore

We started our long weekend with something completely new for us as a family — a surf lesson at Lost Shore, Scotland’s newest and most exciting attraction. Located just 25 minutes from Edinburgh city centre, Lost Shore is the world’s first inland surf resort of its kind, featuring a self-built surf lagoon powered by Wavegarden technology that produces up to 1,000 waves per hour.

The boys were buzzing the moment they saw the lagoon. After a fun and friendly pre-surf briefing, we were straight into our wetsuits and out on the water. Somehow, all four of us managed to stand up on our boards during the first session — a very proud family moment.

Afterwards, cold hands and windswept hair were rewarded at The Canteen, where we warmed up with rich hot chocolates and homemade pizzas. The perfect start to the weekend.

Checking In – Our Home on George Street

From Lost Shore, we headed into the city and checked into our gorgeous two-bedroom Tur Suite at RIGH Residences.

The suite instantly felt like home — spacious, cosy, beautifully designed and incredibly comfortable. Warm lighting, plush furnishings, a modern kitchen and a calm living space that made relaxing feel effortless.

Why RIGH Residences was perfect for our family

The location
You cannot beat being right on George Street. Restaurants, cafés, shops and attractions are all just steps away. St James Quarter, Princes Street Gardens, the Royal Mile, Waverley Station — everything was right there.

The Tur Suite itself
Two bedrooms, a large living room, a dining space, a modern kitchen and bathrooms that felt like a boutique hotel. Plenty of space for a family to spread out.

The thoughtful touches
Laura Thomas Co toiletries, shortbread on arrival, glass bottles of Irn Bru in the fridge and an intuitive in-room iPad for anything we needed.

The residents’ lounge
A calm little haven where we enjoyed complimentary pastries and coffee every morning. Such a lovely way to start the day.

The flexibility
We could pop back to the apartment whenever the boys needed a rest. If you’re a parent, you’ll know how much this changes the pace of a city break.

Breakfast at Côte Brasserie
Just across the road, and included for RIGH guests. Think real French croissants, granola, soft poached eggs, fresh juice and great coffee.

It was the perfect blend of luxury, comfort and practicality — exactly what we look for when travelling as a family.

Pizza Night at Salerno

After settling in, we wandered along George Street and made our way to one of our favourites: Salerno Pizza in St James Quarter. It’s relaxed and stylish, and their mushroom and truffle pizza is honestly one of my all-time favourites. The boys devoured theirs and we strolled back through the city just as the autumn lights were flickering on. Edinburgh at dusk is always magic.

Pancakes, Pastries and Slow Mornings

Saturday morning began with the boys cooking pancakes in the apartment, followed by a visit to the residents’ lounge for warm pastries and good coffee. No rush, no schedule. Just a cosy slow morning before a full day of exploring.

Camera Obscura and a Lot of Laughing

Our first stop was Camera Obscura & World of Illusions, and it was an instant hit.

The boys went from “is this going to be boring?” to completely obsessed in minutes.

The experience starts on the rooftop where you’re treated to incredible panoramic views, including a perfect look at Edinburgh Castle. Then we headed down to see the original Camera Obscura in action — a 19th-century optical marvel using mirrors and natural light to project real-time images of the city.

The illusions, the vortex tunnel, the interactive exhibits and Sofia’s enthusiasm made the visit such fun. We especially loved “picking people up and splatting them”. You’ll have to experience that one for yourself.

Royal Mile Wanders and Mary’s Milk Bar

After Camera Obscura, we wandered along the Royal Mile, soaking in the charm, the music, the tartan shops and the little closes that make the city feel timeless.

We continued down to the Grassmarket, where the boys immediately spotted the pastel lights of Mary’s Milk Bar. We were first in line, but within minutes the queue was stretching down the street — always a good sign. Their milk ice cream is unbelievable. A must-visit.

A Cosy Night In

After a full day of exploring, we headed back to the apartment for a cosy family night in. Hot showers, fluffy pyjamas, snacks and a film. Outside, George Street glowed. Inside, it was quiet and warm and exactly what we all needed.

Brunch at Mimi’s Bakehouse

On Sunday morning, we visited Mimi’s Bakehouse inside the City Art Centre. A cosy, art-inspired café serving indulgent breakfasts and homemade cakes. We ordered full Scottish breakfasts with potato scones and haggis, plus freshly baked scones and good coffee. The perfect comfort-food brunch.

Afternoon Thrills – Scotland’s First Alpine Coaster

Our afternoon adventure took us to the Alpine Coaster at the Midlothian Snowsports Centre in Hillend, about 25 minutes from the city.

Scotland’s first alpine coaster did not disappoint. Each of us had our own cart and raced down the hillside with Edinburgh’s skyline behind us. It was fast, fun and such a hit with the boys.

If you prefer something calmer, a scenic walk up Arthur’s Seat is always a winner — especially for sunrise or sunset.

Golden Hour Magic

One of my favourite moments of the whole trip was simply watching the sun set over Edinburgh from our apartment. Autumn light in this city is soft, golden and fleeting. We stood by the window watching the castle silhouette against the glowing sky, and it felt like one of those simple but unforgettable travel moments.

If you visit, make time for sunrise or sunset. Edinburgh absolutely shines in golden hour.

Final Thoughts

Our weekend in Edinburgh was everything we needed. A blend of adventure, food, rest and connection set against the most beautiful autumn backdrop.

RIGH Residences made the trip even more special. Stylish, central, peaceful and full of thoughtful touches that make travelling as a family feel effortless.

If you’re planning a family trip to Edinburgh, autumn is a wonderful time to visit — scenic, cosy and full of experiences for all ages.
